Introducing new apps and new verbs for the Facebook Timeline

Announced during the F8, last September, the Open graph 2 (a facebook protocol that regroups all the social network’s features) and the Timeline are now open to all developers who’s goal is to help their clients to integrate effectively their social activities. You have probably already witnessed this movement with the first social apps: Spotify, Deezer, Dailymotion…

These applications want to reflect your daily activities: lifestyle apps, media apps, fooding apps, music apps… For this public launch, 60 new applications saw the light of day: Cinemur, Pinterest… these applications are integrated directly into your timeline and also benefit from their own version of timeline. As a result, creating a unique way to share your latest culinary, film, musical and sporting experiences with your friends.

What can you do with this Timeline? In September 2001, we already presented some music services via applications like Spotify and Deezer. These new features permit you to integrate the social aspect of your activities.

The Reader: For news sites, blogs… you will have the possibility to directly integrate your favorite articles through Facebook. The Washington post is one of first to have launched its social reader: http://apps.facebook.com/wpsocialreader/

This daily newspaper now offers a number of articles and other content through its application. Your reading articles will automatically appear on your news feed and ticker (a bit like Telex, which appears on the right of your Facebook interface, permitting you to follow what your friends are doing live). You will no longer miss any of the new viral articles being passed around by your friends.

Verbs: the Open graph 2 now allows you to create your own wording. Before you could like or recommend content. Now, you can create your words to describe a specific activity: I am “watching’ a “film”, I am “reading” a “book”, I am “buying”, I “want”…By being more explicit about your activity, you can better analyze your doings and content on internet. You can associate different words to the same post and, as a result, know how users feel about it. Do they just like the product or are they willing to buy it? Thus, providing powerful and useful measurements.


Another reassuring point for users is that these social apps and timeline will allow you to better protect your private life. When you use your facebook account to connect to Dailymotion or Spotify, you can choose to integrate, or not, these applications to your timeline, thus, ensuring your privacy. Example: I can show my activity on Deezer to everyone, activity on Dailymotion to friends and only have a list of 3 best friends for Spotify. In the end, you have complete control or what you share.

Companies, marketing directors, digital managers… will now find a fabulous working ground to promote content, products…The viral potential of information and engagement levels with your community will be vastly improved. It is also a wonderful revolution for recommendations. What better medium when you can compare feedback from your friends with your own feelings.The next step of upgrading your pages, around the new Timeline set up, will be an exciting new challenge for the Tigerlily team.
